A day in the life of a Biomedical Sciences student: a glimpse of academic adventure

Marli Mendes is a Year 3 student on the BSc Biomedical Sciences course at Manchester. Here, Marli takes us through a typical day at university.

My journey through The University of Manchester is a whirlwind of academic exploration, friendships, and juggling responsibilities, making every day a new and thrilling adventure.

First lecture of the day

My Tuesdays kick off with a 9am lecture in a subject that has me utterly captivated: Hormones and Behaviour, a module where the topics range from sexual differentiation in the brain and gonads of different species to sexual mimicry (why do female hyenas resemble the opposite gender down there?).

The science behind sexual development in various species is a complex puzzle, and my professor expertly unravels it during each lecture, always jumping at every opportunity to make a cheeky joke. It’s an academic subject that keeps me engaged and constantly learning.

Two coffees at Caffe Nero.Caffeine and a catch-up

When the lecture concludes, I find myself searching for an aesthetic cheap cafΓ© – a hub for my friends and I, where we indulge in coffee dates and taking pictures (yes, the camera does drink first!).

These moments are more than just a caffeine fix; they are our opportunities to bond, relax, and share insights about our coursework. But since I am an academic babe at heart, my day transforms into a study session, the quizlets, the notion notes and the mind maps summarising the main takeaways of the lectures, and perhaps a dose of laughter if I’m having a group study session.

Student coordinator activities

As a student coordinator, keeping up with emails, organising debriefs, managing and attending meetings must be done constantly to ensure effective communication with my peers.

Although it’s sometimes tiring and I have found myself overwhelmed by the role, I must say that it is now an essential part of my university journey, teaching me how to handle responsibility and adding dynamic dimension to my academic life.

Time for exercise

As the sun sets over Oxford Road, I decide to unwind from the day by attending a Pilates class in the Northern Quarter (not done as often as I wish – I blame my bank account).

It’s about delving deep into subjects that intrigue me, building friendships that enrich my life, and taking on leadership roles that prepare me for the future.

Being a Biomedical Sciences student is a dynamic blend of learning, camaraderie, and personal growth. Each day is an opportunity to explore the exciting world of academia, strengthen connections with peers, and develop essential skills for the future.

Manchester’s academic journey is an adventure that leaves me inspired and eager to face each day’s challenges head on.
